G2 High Temperature Automotive Paint and Clear Coat?

December 26th, 2011 by BillH
G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

I’ve received quite a few questions about clear coat lately. Specifically, which clear coat would I recommend for use with our G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set and our G2 High Temperature Engine Paint System Set? My answer to this question is simple…

None!

Only inferior single stage ceramic based paint kits cure to a matte finish and only inferior single stage ceramic based paint kits require a clear coat to give them a high gloss shine.

The reason you are buying our high quality dual stage epoxy based brake caliper paint kit and not some inferior ceramic based kit is because our G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set and our G2 High Temperature Engine Paint System Set will cure to a high gloss finish, so there is no need for a clear coat.

The problem with adding a clear coat is that most are not heat resistant and will yellow and brown if exposed to the high temperatures associated with the friction created from braking, distorting the base coat color and making it appear to be a darker shade at best and downright awful at worst!

To be honest… Even those clear coats which are heat resistant have a tendency to peel so it is really not recommended that you apply them to your calipers

When you purchase the G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set or G2 High Temperature Engine Paint System Set you are already guaranteed a high-gloss, wear-resistant shine! Why mess with perfection?

So what are you waiting for??? Go paint your calipers already! Do You Offer a G2 High Temperature Automotive Paint Touch Up Kit?

December 23rd, 2011 by BillH
G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

Let’s face it… Mistakes happen. They are a part of life!

So occasionally I will get an email asking if we offer a G2 High Temperature Automotive Paint Touch Up Kit. The answer is…

No.

Unfortunately we do not offer a touch up kit, as this simply isn’t possible. It’s not that we wouldn’t like to offer a touch up kit for our G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set and our G2 High Temperature Engine Paint System Set! We would, however due to the nature of our high temperature automotive paints and the fact that they are a two-part epoxy application there is no real way to offer a pre-mixed touch up application as it would harden long before it ever reached our customers.

Unfortunately an un-mixed touch up application isn’t realy feasible either as the volume of materials required in order to get a good formulation is such that it would be about the same as a standard kit… Meaning the cost would be about the same as a standard kit. In which case… Why not just buy a standard kit?

Alternatively, there is more than enough paint in our standard G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set to paint four calipers with some left over. Why not convince a friend to paint their calipers the same color and use their left overs to touch up your own?

What are you waiting for??? Go paint your calipers already! If you have any questions, as always I value your feedback, you can contact me via e-mail at billh@g2usa.com, or if you prefer to call me, I am here to answer your questions Monday through Friday 9 AM/CST – 5 PM/CST at 1-847-388-3901!

Can I Mix G2 High Temperature Automotive Paint in Batches?

December 21st, 2011 by BillH

In a previous post we talked about not being able to save left over paint, and use it again another day due to our high temperature automotive paints being epoxy based.

Some of you responded to that post asking if it would be possible to mix our paint in batches… The answer to this question is…

Yes and no

G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

When you receive your G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set or G2 High Temperature Engine Paint System Set, the amounts are pre-measured. In other words if you pour the entire jar of reactor into the can and stir (As is recommended.) you have the optimal amounts of both parts to achieve the high-gloss self-leveling finish that you have come to expect from our high temperature automotive paints. This is how our paint was meant to be used.

However being that there is a 4-6 hr. working time with our paint once the reactor is added, this question, like the one from the previous post usually arises from those who don’t own and or don’t want to invest in a good set of jack stands. The logic being, if you mix half of the reactor with half of the brake caliper paint you can jack one side of the car up and do the calipers, allow them to cure, and then repeat the process on the other side with the other half of the reactor and brake caliper paint. Sounds great in theory… However it doesn’t work out that well in practice.

As I said earlier, when you receive your G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set or G2 High Temperature Engine Paint System Set, the amounts are pre-measured. So in order to achieve the high-gloss self-leveling finish that you have come to expect from our high temperature automotive paints you would need to split these amounts in half perfectly… This is harder than it sounds.

It’s definitely not something you can eyeball, it needs to be done by weight, and you’ll need a jeweler’s scale that’s accurate. Otherwise the formula may be skewed and the finish will be adversely affected. So yes… You can mix our brake caliper paint in batches, however it is certainly not recommended. It’s much easier to simply invest in a good set of jack stands (Which will run you approximately $15.00 at any chain automotive parts store), and make sure all of your prep work ie. cleaning the calipers, applying masking tape, etc. is done before mixing the reactor in with the paint.

Can I Save Left Over G2 High Temperature Automotive Paint, and Use It Again Tomorrow?

December 19th, 2011 by BillH
G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

G2 Brake Caliper Paint System Set

This is another question that I get asked quite often. The answer is…

No!!!

Both the G2 High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint System Set and the G2 High Temperature Engine Paint System Set is an epoxy based paint, and as such it has a 4-6 hr. working time once the reactor is added to the paint.

Being that there is a 4-6 hr. working time with our line of high temperature automotive paints this question usually arises from those who don’t own and or don’t want to invest in a good set of jack stands. The logic being, if you jack one side of the car up and paint the calipers, you can store the remaining paint in an air tight container, and then come back tomorrow and repeat the process on the other side.

5 Jack Stands

Do yourself a favor, invest in a good set of jackstands.

Make no mistake… Sealing the paint in an air tight container will absolutely not retard the curing process in any way! If you attempt this, rest assured when you come back the next day to paint the other side you will have a very bright, very hard hockey puck. The hardening process is a chemical reaction which occurs when the reactor is added to the paint, plain and simple.

It’s much easier to simply invest in a good set of jack stands (Which will run you approximately $15.00 at any chain automotive parts store), and make sure all of your prep work ie. cleaning the calipers, applying masking tape, etc. is done before mixing the reactor in with the paint.
